As with any production of 42nd Street, the biggest challenge in this show is how to blend the strength of a big band orchestra, a colossal amount of tap shoes, and diverse vocal performances into a cohesive aural space. My design for this production involved carefully placed boundary and shotgun mics while working closely with the choreographer to maximize the sound coming off of the stage. A separate mixing console managed the tap mics and was programmed on scenes fired from the primary console. A lot of forethought went into the three categories of sound coming from the people on stage, and the mix involved large movements of each of these elements to let them take the audience’s focus at the right time.
